DescriptionThe whole story

Front brake feel is what an R1 rider talks about after a session, not horsepower. ZCOO lists the S001 here, cut to 69.5 by 50.5 mm for the Sumitomo caliper carried by the Yamaha R1. The compound is EXR, ZCOO's 2026 answer for R1 riders who found EX Race short on authority.

Key Features

  • Wear stays even across the 69.5 mm of friction face rather than concentrating at the leading edge
  • Holds its friction level through the heat cycles an R1 front end goes through in a single hard ride
  • The S001 is the thickest friction stack ZCOO builds: 69.5 mm by 50.5 mm, 8.8 mm deep
  • Direct replacement for the standard Sumitomo pad on the Yamaha R1 - no shims, no spacers, no modification
  • Predictable in the wet, because the compound does not need temperature to start working on a R1
  • New backing plate alloy, specified with the compound instead of carried over from the EXC Endurance mixture EXR replaces

Construction and Material Quality

The construction of the S001 is where ZCOO's endurance experience actually shows. Expansion gaps between the friction blocks let the S001 material grow into the gaps when hot instead of building stress against itself. It is also why ZCOO can quote fade resistance beyond 600 degrees for the S001 without qualifying it.

Performance and Feel

EXC Endurance was built for race distance and behaved like it: strong once hot, vague before. EXR is the compound ZCOO now supplies to its endurance teams, in the S001 shape the R1 takes. Over a session on the Yamaha R1 that consistency is worth more than any single hard stop.

Fitment and Compatibility

The S001 is ZCOO's listed reference for the Yamaha R1 between 2015 and 2024. The same S001 shape covers 27 further machines in the 2026 catalogue. Nothing in the ZCOO range fits the rear axle of the R1. Before ordering, check that your caliper takes a pad of 69.5 mm length and 50.5 mm height.

Road Approval

No ECE R90 type approval is documented for this pad. It appears neither in ZCOO's own catalogue nor on the European distributor's site, and no approval number is printed on the packaging data available to us. ZCOO itself describes the compound as suited to competition machines and road machines alike, but that is a description of the mixture, not a type approval. Until the distributor confirms an approval in writing, treat this as a track and competition part: in Germany a replacement brake pad without ECE R90 approval may not be fitted to a motorcycle used on public roads. Ask us before ordering if you need this clarified for your machine.
