A finer element is often bought in the belief that it will last longer. It will not. In the same air, the CM195P14 reaches a given resistance sooner than the standard weave does, because it is holding back material the coarser cloth simply passed. That is the whole trade written on a calendar: the protection goes up and the inspection comes forward. For a Bullet Trials 500 EFI that spends time on loose surfaces it is a reasonable bargain — as long as it is struck with open eyes.
Key Features
- Special dry non-woven with a 14 µm filtration rating
- 1,800 l/m²/sec of rated flow, against the 5,050 of the standard 80 µm weave
- Run completely dry — no oiling when new, none after washing
- About double the filter surface of other performance elements, in the standard housing
- Fits the series airbox unmodified; fuelling and ducting stay as they are
- Cleaned and reused rather than replaced, with two years of warranty
Interval, not lifespan
Nothing about the finer medium slows the rate at which dirt arrives; it only decides how much of it stops at the filter instead of continuing. More material stopped means the element approaches its working limit earlier, so the sensible response is to open the box more often rather than less. Since this one is washed instead of bought, opening the box more often is a cost in time and not in parts — which is exactly what makes a fine medium practical on a machine that meets dust regularly.
What sits behind it
Everything the filter stops is material that would otherwise pass a throttle body, a sensor and eventually a cylinder bore, and none of that produces a symptom worth watching for. That is the argument for the fine medium, and it is the only one: a drop-in filter does not make a standard machine noticeably stronger, and 1,800 l/m²/sec is less flow than the standard weave offers, not more. On a 500 single the demand stays well under either number, so the reduction is headroom surrendered rather than a limit imposed — but it is surrendered, and it belongs in the decision.
Care and cleaning
Air first, and always from the clean face outwards: hold the line at a little distance and move it steadily across the CM195P14 rather than concentrating it in one spot. Greasy films come off with warm water and a mild washing-up liquid, then a clear rinse. Let it dry right through in ordinary air — heat of any kind, from a hairdryer to a flame, is what actually kills these elements — and refit it dry, with nothing applied. Downloads has the maintenance sheet.
