Fifteen thousand litres per square metre per second is a figure measured on dry cloth. A wet weave is not a clean weave: the openings the rating was taken through are the openings the water is sitting in, and an element pushed back into the airbox before it has dried right through gives away the single property it was bought for. On this medium the drying step is not the boring end of the cleaning job. It is where the specification is kept or lost, and the CM265S F1-85 asks three times what the standard element asks for a number that one impatient afternoon can undo.
Key Features
- Racing polyester weave, run dry, filtering at 85 µm
- 15,000 l/m²/sec of rated flow, against 5,050 for the standard weave in the same housing
- Retention measured at 95.22 % of 100-micron particles in the manufacturer comparison
- About double the filter area of other performance elements, in the unaltered airbox
- No oil at any stage, so cleaning is a physical job and not a re-treatment
- Fits the factory panel position exactly; two years of warranty from the date of purchase
Why drying carries the specification
Every medium Sprint Filter builds is dry by design, and that is what makes compressed air the primary service rather than a rinse. Water is the exception step, brought in for greasy contamination that air cannot shift, and it introduces the one condition the fabric will not tolerate being hurried out of. Warm air from a gun or a radiator does not simply speed the process up, it damages the material at temperatures reached long before anything looks wrong. So the element goes somewhere ventilated and stays there. On a filter chosen for flow, a shortcut in this step costs the reason for the purchase.
What the racing weave does not change
It does not change the intake note, the fuelling, the service schedule or the type approval of the Shotgun 650, and it asks for no remap and no downstream work. It does not add power either: a drop-in element does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger, and a coarser weave is not an exception to that. What it changes is one rated figure, and the honest reading of that figure for road use is that it will sit unused. The standard 80 µm medium fits the same box and suits this motorcycle better; the 14 µm non-woven suits genuinely dusty roads better still.
Care and cleaning
Air from the clean face outwards, and that is most services dealt with. Where the load is oily, hand-warm water and a mild detergent, then a rinse that runs clear. Then time: the CM265S F1-85 dries in moving air, with nothing warm anywhere near it, and goes back in only once it is dry through and through. Nothing is applied to it afterwards. The maintenance sheet is filed under Downloads.
