DescriptionThe whole story▼
Part number KA 740 is what Öhlins supplies for the Kawasaki Z900RS CAFE, model years 2017–2023. Standard rear dampers are built to a price; this one is built to a specification.
Key Features
- Adjustable rebound damping via the knob above the lower eyelet
- Spring rate as delivered: 100 N/mm, matched to the Z900RS CAFE
- Built to 350 +10/-2 mm installed length
- 69 mm working stroke
- Monotube damper layout
- Öhlins spring 21103-34 included
- Remote hydraulic spring-preload adjuster on a flexible hose
- Gas-pressurised monotube damper with the reservoir integrated into the body
Damping and Adjustment
350 +10/-2 mm of adjustment turns ride height into a setting rather than a fixed dimension. At 46 mm the piston is large enough that the shim stack, not the orifice, decides the damping. Öhlins supplies spring 21103-34 with this unit. The available stroke of 69 mm sets how much wheel travel the shim stack has to control. Adjustment is by click rather than by feel, so a setting can be written down and returned to. Preload is set separately again, and preload is what determines static sag rather than damping.
Construction and Material Quality
Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The eyelets carry spherical bearings rather than rubber bushes, so the damper is not fighting its own mounting.
About the STX 46 Blackline Range
The Blackline finish exists because not every motorcycle suits Öhlins yellow. Öhlins prices Blackline the same as the standard finish, so the choice is purely visual. Riders choose it when a gold shock would sit wrong against the bike's own colours, and it costs the same as the standard finish.
Setting It Up for the Z900RS CAFE
Heritage bikes are frequently ridden two-up, which exposes a soft standard damper immediately. Öhlins covers the 7-year production run of this generation with a single part number, which means the mounting and the linkage stayed unchanged across it.
Fitment and Compatibility
Öhlins releases KA 740 against the Kawasaki Z900RS CAFE (2017–2023). 4 machines in the range take this number, the Kawasaki Z900RS CAFE among them.
Road Approval
Road approval: ABE (Germany). The unit is covered by a German ABE for the Kawasaki Z900RS CAFE, so no individual inspection or entry in the vehicle documents is required. The approval document ships with the product.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
