DescriptionThe whole story▼

Travel on a Yamaha XT660Z Ténéré often leaves the tarmac behind: gravel roads, dusty tracks, and now and then a river or a flooded stretch that has to be crossed. Each of these reaches the front brakes. Accossato lists the DKS073 for the XT660Z Ténéré from 2008 to 2015, a floating front disc with a black carrier. Its 298 mm ring is 5 mm thick, and the disc bolts on through five 8.5 mm holes on a 150 mm circle; Accossato calls it interchangeable with the original.

Key Features

  • Floating front disc for the Yamaha XT660Z Ténéré, 2008 to 2015
  • Friction ring and black carrier, joined by rivets
  • 298 mm outer diameter, 132 mm inner diameter
  • 5 mm thickness
  • Five holes of 8.5 mm on a 150 mm hole circle
  • Can replace the original disc, says Accossato
  • Price per disc; two are fitted at the front of the Ténéré
  • No German ABE documented, for track use

Construction and Material Quality

The DKS073 separates the working ring from the part that holds it. A 298 mm friction ring, 5 mm thick, is riveted to a black carrier that opens to 132 mm at the centre, and five holes of 8.5 mm on a 150 mm circle locate the disc on the hub, where Accossato says it can take the place of the original. According to the company, the braking force of its discs owes much to carefully studied tolerances between carrier and ring, knowledge it gained in racing.

Water, Dust and Gravel

After a water crossing, the first thing to do is test the brakes. Wet pads and discs bite late and weakly until the water has been wiped off, so drag the brakes lightly for a short distance at low speed until the bite returns, before the next descent or the next car. Muddy water leaves fine silt in the calipers and around the rivets of a floating disc; if it dries there, it grinds away at pads and disc. Rinse the brakes with clean water at the next opportunity.

Dust works more slowly, but just as surely. On long gravel stretches the pads of a Ténéré wear faster than on tarmac, and a grinding sound under braking can mean that grit has worked its way between pad and disc, or that a pad is worn down to its backing plate. Both deserve a stop and a look. Gravel descents also invite heavy use of the rear brake, yet on a loaded bike the front discs still do most of the work.

Back home, give the brakes a thorough service: take out the pads, clean the calipers, check the discs for grooves and measure the thickness against the minimum printed on them. A disc that grit has scored deeply should be replaced even if it has not reached its limit, because deep grooves wear new pads quickly and reduce the contact area.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the DKS073 for the XT660Z Ténéré from 2008 to 2015, with and without ABS. The Ténéré uses two front discs, and the price covers one of them. For the same bikes Accossato also lists the Elite-line DK077. If you replace both discs, fit new pads as well and bed them in on tarmac before heading off-road.

Road Approval

No German ABE is available for the DKS073 and there is no type approval on file. We sell it for track use.

Scope of Delivery

A single DKS073 floating disc with black carrier; the second side needs its own disc.
