Sprint Filter lists three elements for the K 1600 airbox: the 80 µm P08 weave, the 14-micron P14 mat and this one, the 85 µm racing weave. The medium the company builds for wet and demanding conditions, the water-resistant P037, is not among them. That matters on a GTL, the machine on this list most likely to be ridden in the weather that would justify it: the element a rider reaches for on a wet-weather touring bike should not be the most open cloth in the range.
Key Features
- Dry polyester weave opened to 85 microns for maximum flow
- A published rate of 15,000 l/m²/sec, the highest of the three media offered here
- 95.22 per cent retention in the manufacturer's 100-micron particle test
- Roughly double the filter area of an ordinary performance panel
- Exchanged straight for the paper element in the standard housing: no cutting, no remap
- Washable and refitted dry, specified for the life of the motorcycle, two years of warranty
Reading the list in the right direction
The three media are not ranked, they are placed. Aperture and flow move together in opposite senses, so the 85 µm weave passes the most air and stops the least, the 14-micron mat does the reverse, and the standard weave sits between them. A rider changing the element because of rain, road film or winter grit is reasoning towards the fine end of that scale and should stop at the P08 or go past it — not arrive at the racing weave because it heads the price list. Its quoted 95.22 per cent is a coarse-particle result, not a licence to treat it as the fine option.
What a GTL is really asking for
Steadiness. This is a machine that covers its year in long loaded days, mostly at partial throttle and far from a workshop, and the useful property of any dry Sprint Filter element in that life is that it returns from a compressor at the condition it started from, instead of closing slowly until it is replaced. That property is shared by all three media here, which is the point: it is not what the racing weave charges extra for. Nor does any of them add power. An element inside an untouched airbox does not make a standard K 1600 GTL noticeably stronger, and this is the most expensive way of not doing so.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean face clears the PM187S F1-85 in ordinary use, the load leaving by the surface it entered. Rain and road film eventually leave something air cannot take off, and then it is lukewarm water with a little mild detergent, rinsed until nothing more washes out. Drying takes as long as it takes, in moving air only — never against heat, never near a flame — and the element goes back completely dry and unoiled. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is filed in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW K 1600 GTL as listed from 2010 to 2018, a straight replacement in the unmodified series airbox. Four K 1600 variants share this element, with spans running from 2010 through 2019. Two of them overlap almost entirely, so the equipment level rather than the year identifies the machine. The Fitment tab names each.
