Sprint Filter says of itself that no filter maker is more widely used across MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock. That is a company describing its own footprint, not an independent count, and it belongs in a different column from the measured figures further down. What the context does explain is why a water-repellent weave exists at all. A race weekend does not move because it is raining, and a medium that stops working once the airbox takes moisture is no use to anybody who has to go out regardless.
Key Features
- Water-repellent dry polyester — the medium the maker draws for wet and demanding conditions
- 37 µm weave with a published rate of 4,500 l/m²/sec
- 91.8 % of 37-micron particles held back in the manufacturer's own measurement
- A race assembly, but not the carbon-framed WorldSBK one; that is a separate part number
- Never oiled, in any weather, and refitted after cleaning without treatment
- Standard airbox, factory position, no remap, two years of warranty from purchase
Manufacturer's figures, read as such
The retention percentage, the flow rate and the mesh all come from Sprint Filter, taken in Sprint Filter's own way. That is normal for filters and it is not a criticism, but it does set a limit on what a page like this can honestly claim. What an owner can verify without a laboratory is narrower and more practical: that the assembly seats where the paper panel sat, that it comes out of an air line clean, and that nothing has been applied to it. One thing no figure here claims at all is power. An element in an untouched airbox does not make a standard 899 quicker.
What that leaves worth buying
A cloth whose behaviour does not change when the weather does, on a machine that gets ridden through the year rather than on chosen afternoons. With this medium the washing is a planned operation instead of a mishap: the element meets the wet ride and the cleaning that follows as two halves of the same routine, and neither of them ends its life. Set against that is the outlay, which is several times a standard panel's, and a rate slightly below what the standard panel is published at. R127S-WP-AVIO is a conditions decision and reads badly as any other kind.
Care and cleaning
The routine is dry and short. Lift the element out, set an air line against the clean face and work outward until the weave gives up what it is holding. Water comes into it only where a film has dried on: warm from the tap, a little mild detergent, rinsed until it runs off clean. Then patience — the element stands in open air until it is dry through, with no heat gun, no radiator and no flame anywhere near it, and it returns to the box dry and untreated. A maintenance sheet is filed in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the airbox of the Ducati Panigale 899, catalogued under model years 2013 to 2015. The same assembly is listed for five further Ducatis: the 959, the 1199, the 1299 and the 955 cc Panigale V2 and Streetfighter V2. Their attributed windows appear in the Fitment tab.
