DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00698-24 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Powder-coated yellow
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 114 mm of usable stroke
- Measured spring rate 80 N/mm
- Free length 230 mm
- Öhlins part number 00698-24
- Inner diameter 57 mm
Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.
Size and Rate
Free length 230 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 80 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
Choosing 80 N/mm
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
How a Rear Spring Works
The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.
Applications
Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.
What Fitting Involves
Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
