DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21042-24 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 21042-24
  • 86 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Free length 170 mm
  • Measured spring rate 80 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 51 mm × 170 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 80 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

What Fitting Involves

The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
