DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00281-14 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 125 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 46 mm
- 62.1 mm of usable stroke
- Powder-coated yellow
- Free length 125 mm
- Öhlins part number 00281-14
- Measured spring rate 80 N/mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.
Dimensions
Free length 125 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 80 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
Choosing 80 N/mm
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Rate and the Linkage
A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.
Applications
Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.
Fitting
Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
