DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 05672-19 is a shock absorber spring rated at 70 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 67 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 270 mm
  • 141 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 67 mm
  • Measured spring rate 70 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 05672-19
  • Powder-coated yellow

Why the Rate Holds

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 270 mm, inner diameter 67 mm, rate 70 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing the Rate

Too soft a spring shows up as a rear end that sits low and uses its travel early; too firm, as one that stays high and skips over small bumps. Rate decides how much of the shock's travel the machine uses at rest and under load; preload only moves where that travel starts. Whether 70 N/mm counts as soft or firm depends on the machine: the same figure behaves very differently on a twin-shock rear end and on a monoshock working through a linkage.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear ride height also changes the steering geometry, so the rear spring has a say in how the front of the machine turns in. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the shock it is going onto. Inner diameter, free length and rate are listed in the specifications below; compared with the shock, those three figures answer the fitment question. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

Installation

With the shock off the machine anyway, it is a sensible moment to check the mounting bolts and, where fitted, the linkage bearings. Changing a rear spring means taking the shock off the machine; where backing off the preload does not free the spring retainer, a proper spring compressor does the rest. Clean the spring seats before the new spring goes on, so it sits squarely at both ends.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
