DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00698-19 is a shock absorber spring rated at 70 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • 113 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 70 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 00698-19
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 230 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Installation

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
