DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06320-17 is a shock absorber spring rated at 66 N/mm, 215 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 120 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 215 mm
  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Measured spring rate 66 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 06320-17
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Manufacture and Tolerance

Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Size and Rate

The 61 mm bore and 215 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 66 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 66 N/mm

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

What Fitting Involves

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
