DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06451-15 is a shock absorber spring rated at 62 N/mm, 250 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 250 mm
  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 62 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 06451-15
  • 140 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement.

Dimensions

At 250 mm free length and 61 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Installation

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
