DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 65174-19 is a shock absorber spring rated at 60 N/mm, 370 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 370 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 60 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 65174-19

Manufacture and Tolerance

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 370 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Fitting

Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
