DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06411-14 is a shock absorber spring rated at 60 N/mm, 255 mm long with a 63.5 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 06411-14
  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 60 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 63.5 mm
  • Free length 255 mm
  • Tapered-wound, constant rate

Why the Rate Holds

Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 255 mm and the inner diameter at 63.5 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.

Fitting

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
