DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 21067-09 is a shock absorber spring rated at 50 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Öhlins part number 21067-09
- Inner diameter 51 mm
- Measured spring rate 50 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Free length 220 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 119 mm of usable stroke
Why the Rate Holds
Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.
Size and Rate
Öhlins holds the free length at 220 mm and the inner diameter at 51 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
What This Rate Does
If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.
Applications
Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
Installation
The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
