DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00181-13 is a shock absorber spring rated at 50 N/mm, 210 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 50 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 210 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00181-13

How Öhlins Makes Them

The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 210 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 50 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

What Fitting Involves

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
