DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00281-05 is a shock absorber spring rated at 44 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 00281-05
  • Measured spring rate 44 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 112.9 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

How Öhlins Makes Them

Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 220 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

What Fitting Involves

Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
