DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06510-40 is a shock absorber spring rated at 40 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06510-40
  • Free length 300 mm
  • Measured spring rate 40 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

Size and Rate

The 57 mm bore and 300 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 40 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 40 N/mm

If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Installation

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
