DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01092-04 is a shock absorber spring rated at 40 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 40 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 01092-04
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 170 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 102 mm of usable stroke

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 170 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 40 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

What Fitting Involves

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
