DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-03 is a shock absorber spring rated at 38 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • 115 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01096-03
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 38 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

The Numbers That Matter

The 57 mm bore and 190 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 38 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

What Fitting Involves

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
