DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 66422-032 is a shock absorber spring rated at 32 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated black
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Measured spring rate 32 N/mm
  • 120 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 66422-032
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Manufacture and Tolerance

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 220 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 32 N/mm.

Choosing 32 N/mm

On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.

Installation

Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
