DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-28 is a shock absorber spring rated at 32 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00180-28
  • Measured spring rate 32 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 124 mm of usable stroke

Why the Rate Holds

Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 220 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

Fitting

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
