DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01104-95 is a shock absorber spring rated at 310 N/mm, 130 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • 46 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 130 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 310 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01104-95

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 130 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 310 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 310 N/mm

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

How a Rear Spring Works

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Installation

Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
