DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06773-03 is a shock absorber spring rated at 30 N/mm, 390 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 239 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 70 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 30 N/mm
  • Free length 390 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06773-03

How Öhlins Makes Them

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Size and Rate

Free length 390 mm, inner diameter 70 mm, rate 30 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Fitting

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
