DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01104-94 is a shock absorber spring rated at 290 N/mm, 130 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • 47 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 130 mm
  • Measured spring rate 290 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 01104-94

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 130 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

Fitting

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
