DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01096-88 is a shock absorber spring rated at 28 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 28 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 01096-88
- Free length 190 mm
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 116 mm of usable stroke
Why the Rate Holds
Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.
The Numbers That Matter
Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 190 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 28 N/mm.
Where This Rate Belongs
A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
Fitting
The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
