DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-05 is a shock absorber spring rated at 27 N/mm, 90 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 00180-05
  • Measured spring rate 27 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 90 mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • 47 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

Size and Rate

At 90 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 27 N/mm

This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Fitting

Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
