DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 66386-06 is a shock absorber spring rated at 20-29 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Progressively wound
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Measured spring rate 20-29 N/mm (progressive)
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 66386-06

Why the Rate Holds

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

Dimensions

The 46 mm bore and 220 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 20-29 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Rate and the Linkage

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.

What Fitting Involves

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
