DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01099-79 is a shock absorber spring rated at 190 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Measured spring rate 190 N/mm
- Free length 220 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 01099-79
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 82 mm of usable stroke
How Öhlins Makes Them
Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.
The Numbers That Matter
Free length 220 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 190 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
Choosing 190 N/mm
Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.
Applications
This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.
What Fitting Involves
Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
