DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 61104-79 is a shock absorber spring rated at 180 N/mm, 130 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 130 mm
  • Measured spring rate 180 N/mm
  • 53 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 61104-79
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow

Manufacture and Tolerance

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 130 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 180 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

Installation

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
