DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 61091-59 is a shock absorber spring rated at 150 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 160 mm
  • Öhlins part number 61091-59
  • Measured spring rate 150 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

Size and Rate

At 160 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.

Installation

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
