DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-54 is a shock absorber spring rated at 140 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 80 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01096-54
  • Measured spring rate 140 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 190 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

Fitting

Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
