DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21103-49 is a shock absorber spring rated at 130 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • 80 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 130 N/mm
  • Free length 180 mm
  • Öhlins part number 21103-49
  • Powder-coated black

How Öhlins Makes Them

Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 180 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Fitting

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
