DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 61091-49 is a shock absorber spring rated at 130 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 130 N/mm
  • Free length 160 mm
  • 70 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 61091-49
  • Powder-coated yellow

Why the Rate Holds

The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.

Size and Rate

The 57 mm bore and 160 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 130 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Installation

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
