DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 61091-44 is a shock absorber spring rated at 120 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 160 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 73 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 120 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 61091-44

How Öhlins Makes Them

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

At 160 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
