DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00380-02 is a shock absorber spring rated at 12-19 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Get the rear rate wrong and the machine sits at the wrong height before it has moved a metre.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 12-19 N/mm (progressive)
- Öhlins part number 00380-02
- Inner diameter 46 mm
- 120 mm of usable stroke
- Progressively wound
- Free length 200 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
How Öhlins Makes Them
Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.
Dimensions
Öhlins holds the free length at 200 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Rate and Sag
As a progressive spring it starts at the lower figure and firms up towards the higher one as it compresses, which is what the range 12-19 N/mm describes. The right rate is the one that reaches Öhlins' sag targets with the preload adjuster somewhere in its working range, not wound fully in or fully out. Whether 12-19 N/mm counts as soft or firm depends on the machine: the same figure behaves very differently on a twin-shock rear end and on a monoshock working through a linkage.
How a Rear Spring Works
Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of the rear suspension's lever, not at the wheel. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.
Applications
This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the shock it is going onto. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and a shock whose spring seats take this diameter and length is a candidate.
Installation
Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the adjusters do. Refit the shock with the preload still wound off, then set preload with the machine back on its wheels.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
