DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-39 is a shock absorber spring rated at 110 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01096-39
  • Free length 190 mm
  • 88 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 110 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.

Size and Rate

At 190 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.

What Fitting Involves

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
