DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21066-36 is a shock absorber spring rated at 105 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 21066-36
  • Measured spring rate 105 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 93 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 200 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 51 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Size and Rate

At 200 mm free length and 51 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 105 N/mm

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

Installation

Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
