DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21041-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 21041-34
  • 73 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 150 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 150 mm and the inner diameter at 51 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

How a Rear Spring Works

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

What Fitting Involves

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
