Function
Öhlins gives it as 6 mm, 8 mm, 0.10 mm; nothing about that is approximate. Changing one shim in a stack alters the damping curve measurably; that is why Öhlins sells them individually rather than only as sets. Shims are reused only if they are undamaged and flat; a coned shim is finished. Outer diameter sets the lever the oil works against; thickness sets how hard it resists.

Öhlins grinds shims to a flatness tolerance because the faces have to seal against each other.
