DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08434-75 is a pair of fork springs rated at 7.5 N/mm, 445 mm long with a 41 mm inner diameter. Too stiff and the front loses feel over bumps; too soft and it dives under the brakes. Rate sets that balance.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 08434-75
  • Inner diameter 41 mm
  • 248 mm of usable stroke
  • Tapered-wound, constant rate
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Free length 445 mm
  • Measured spring rate 7.5 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Dimensions

Free length 445 mm, inner diameter 41 mm, rate 7.5 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.

Fitting

Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
