Both gains at 4,550 rpm: 1.2 PS and 2.0 Nm. On a water-cooled boxer geared for touring, that is the middle of sixth gear on a country road — the single rev figure a rider on an R 1200 sees more than any other.

The Last Boxer Before ShiftCam
These are the 2015 to 2018 machines: the water-cooled 1,170 cc boxer, before BMW introduced variable valve timing with the 1250 in 2019. It is a well-understood engine with a broad, flat torque curve, and it responds to an exhaust in the middle rather than at the top — which is exactly where the measurement lands.
For the later R 1250 R and RS the exhaust mounting changed, and this part does not carry over. Check the model designation in the registration document rather than the badge on the tank.
R and RS
The R 1200 R is the naked roadster; the RS adds a half fairing, a taller screen and a slightly more forward riding position. Same engine, same frame, same exhaust mount — one silencer for both, and the black coating suits the exposed frame of the R as well as the bodywork of the RS.
Modest Weight, Named Honestly
0.6 kg is not a dramatic saving, and BMW's standard silencer here is not the heavy steel box some manufacturers fit. What the Akrapovic delivers is the torque at 4,550 rpm, a boxer sound the standard system muffles, and a titanium and carbon finish in place of painted steel — with the panniers still bolted on.
One Thing to Know
No removable noise insert is supplied with this silencer. The sound level is what it produces as built, type approved at that level but not adjustable.
Twenty Minutes on an Exposed Boxer
A boxer engine puts its cylinders out to the sides and leaves the middle of the motorcycle open, and BMW hangs the silencer on the right with nothing above it. Two clamps and a hanger, and the standard unit is off — which is why Akrapovic quotes twenty minutes where a faired bike would need an hour.
Nothing else on the motorcycle changes. The header and catalytic converter stay standard, the engine management is untouched, and the original silencer refits just as quickly if the bike is sold in original condition.
