DescriptionThe whole story▼
A Ducati Multistrada 1200 is built to cover distance, and many of them have. Ridden from one country to the next, they can reach the recommended replacement interval for their front discs, which do the bulk of the stopping on a heavy touring bike, within a few seasons. The DKS053 from Accossato is one answer for the Multistrada 1200 of 2010 to 2018: a floating disc for the front wheel with a black carrier and a 320 mm ring, which the maker says swaps directly for the factory disc.
Key Features
- Floating front disc for the Ducati Multistrada 1200, 2010 to 2018
- Covers the DVT, GT, Touring and ABS versions on Accossato's list
- 320 mm outer diameter, 72 mm inner diameter, 5.5 mm thickness
- Five 8.5 mm fixing holes on a 90 mm circle
- Black carrier
- Interchangeable with the original disc, according to Accossato
- Minimum thickness printed on each disc
- One disc per purchase; two needed for the front wheel
Construction and Material Quality
On the DKS053, an outer ring for the pads and a black inner carrier for the hub are held together by rivets that allow a small, controlled float. The ring measures 320 mm across and 5.5 mm in thickness; the carrier sits on a 72 mm centre, and its five 8.5 mm holes are arranged on a 90 mm circle. Accossato attributes its disc know-how to racing in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3 and says the matching of ring and carrier is where much of its work goes.
Counting the Kilometres
Accossato gives a rule of thumb for its discs: renew them after thirty to forty thousand kilometres, or earlier if a disc is worn, scored, cracked or below its minimum thickness. On an adventure tourer that covers long distances, that figure comes round surprisingly fast, and a Multistrada 1200 often reaches it while the brake still feels fine at the lever. Disc wear is gradual, and a slow decline over several years gives no sudden warning.
That is why a thickness reading tells you more than the calendar. Measure each disc at several points around the friction band with a micrometer, since wear is rarely even, and compare the smallest figure with the minimum printed on the disc. Write the reading in the service book with the date and the mileage. A second reading a year later shows how fast the discs wear on your kind of riding and lets you order replacements before a long trip rather than in the middle of one. Accossato warns that a disc worn too thin can break under extreme stress, so the printed figure is a limit, not a suggestion.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DKS053 for the Multistrada 1200 from 2010 to 2018, naming the standard bike, the ABS version from 2010 to 2016, the DVT from 2015 to 2017, the GT from 2013 to 2014 and the Touring from 2015 to 2017. The Multistrada 1200 has two front discs. Change both at once, with new pads, and torque the bolts to Ducati's figures.
Road Approval
No German ABE and no type approval are documented for the DKS053; it is supplied for track and competition use.
Scope of Delivery
A single floating front disc with black carrier; a Multistrada 1200 needs two.
