DescriptionThe whole story▼

A single-cylinder 250 like the Benelli BN 251 wants to be kept in the right gear, which means plenty of gear changes, and each of them is a small piece of coordination between the left hand and the left foot. For newer riders that coordination takes a while to become smooth. The Accossato ESD037 is a clutch lever for the BN 251 of 2016 and 2017, machined from aluminium, adjustable in its distance to the grip and fitted at the original clutch mounting.

Key Features

  • Clutch lever for the Benelli BN 251, 2016 to 2017
  • Mounts on the original clutch mounting
  • Reach adjuster close to the pivot
  • Standard blade approx. 138 mm, short and long versions in some colours
  • Black hub, blade in black, blue, red, orange, gold, silver or green
  • Milled from solid aluminium, anodised
  • One-piece blade without a folding joint

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato makes the ESD037 by machining it from solid aluminium, a light metal that can be cut accurately and takes an anodised finish well. The finish comes in two tones: a black hub, which houses the pivot and the reach adjuster, and a blade in the colour of your choice. Because the ESD037 is a fixed lever, blade and hub form one continuous piece, with no hinge between them and no second pivot. Apart from its swing around the mounting bolt, nothing in the lever is designed to move. For a rider who is still learning, that simplicity is welcome: there is one thing to set, the reach, and nothing else to think about.

Pull, Shift, Release

A clean upshift has three parts, and their order matters. Ease the throttle and pull the clutch in at the same moment, move the gear lever firmly with your foot, then let the clutch out as you open the throttle again. Done quickly and in rhythm, the bike barely nods. Done hesitantly, the revs drop or flare and the change arrives with a jolt. On a small single like the BN 251, which likes to be kept in its rev range, you may change gear more often than on a larger bike, so the rhythm is worth practising. A lever within easy reach helps, because the fingers are already in position when the pull begins and the whole sequence gets shorter. Set the adjuster so that the blade sits just in front of your outstretched fingers, and practise on a quiet road until pull, shift and release blend into one movement.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the ESD037 for the BN 251 from 2016 to 2017. It replaces the original clutch lever at the standard mounting. The matching brake lever for the same years is the EDF016, available in the same colours, so the two sides can match or deliberately differ.

Road Approval

This lever carries no documented German ABE; it is therefore sold for closed-course use.
