DescriptionThe whole story▼
Many a Thruxton 900 is cleaned with more care than the average motorcycle. Owners polish the chrome, work their way around the spokes of the wire wheels and go over the tank before riding to a café meet. The Accossato EDF014 replaces the brake lever of the air-cooled Thruxton built from 2004 to 2015 with an adjustable blade machined from aluminium and anodised rather than chromed or painted, a finish that asks for different care from the metal around it.
Key Features
- Replacement brake lever for the Thruxton 900, 2004 to 2015
- Mounts on the original master cylinder
- Adjustable reach to the handlebar grip
- Three blade lengths; standard approximately 138 mm
- Anodised aluminium, CNC-machined from the solid
- Black hub, blade in one of seven colours, silver and black included
- Fixed blade without a hinge
- Road use in Germany not covered: no ABE documented, sold for track use
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato, founded in 1969 in Moncalieri near Turin as a maker of competition motorcycles, cuts the EDF014 from a solid block of aluminium on CNC machines. When the shape is finished, the lever is anodised in two tones: black for the hub, where the pivot and the reach adjustment are housed, and the colour of your choice for the blade. The blade is a single rigid piece with no hinge between pivot and tip. Machining leaves the surfaces smooth enough to need no coating on top of the anodised layer, and it is that layer which decides how the lever should be cleaned.
Polish for the Chrome, Soap for the Lever
Chrome and anodised aluminium can look alike from a distance, yet they need opposite treatment. Metal polish works on chrome because it contains a fine abrasive that takes off a thin film of tarnish. An anodised surface is itself a thin layer: the oxide grows out of the aluminium and holds the dye, and although it is hard, an abrasive paste will wear through it with enough rubbing, starting at the edges of the blade where the cloth presses hardest. So when the Thruxton 900 gets its clean before a meeting, leave the lever out of the polishing. Warm water with a little mild soap, a soft cloth and a dry towel are all it needs, and if the reservoir is opened during a service, wipe off any spilled brake fluid straight away, as the fluid is hard on most finishes. Looked after like this, a silver or black blade keeps an even sheen beside the chrome for a long time.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the EDF014 for the Thruxton 900 from 2004 to 2015, and among the versions on its list is a Steve McQueen SE of 2012. The liquid-cooled Thruxton models from 2016 onwards have listings of their own. On the clutch side of the Thruxton 900, the EST333 covers the same model years with the same black hub and colour range. Black and red blades exist only in the standard length, silver in standard and short, while orange, blue, green and gold are made in all three.
Road Approval
Accossato has no German ABE for this lever, and none is documented, so we sell it for the race track only.
