DescriptionThe whole story▼
The BMW R 1200 RT is the touring boxer of the range, with a full fairing, room for luggage and a seat made for long days, and many RTs spend their summers on group tours with friends or clubs. In a group, your brake light is the first thing the rider behind you reacts to, so the way you brake affects everyone following. Accossato's EDB077 replaces the front brake lever of the liquid-cooled R 1200 RT of 2014 to 2019 with a CNC-machined aluminium part whose reach you can adjust.
Key Features
- Brake lever for the BMW R 1200 RT from 2014 to 2019
- Mounts on the factory front master cylinder
- Distance between blade and grip adjustable
- Standard blade roughly 138 mm; short and long in selected colours
- Aluminium, CNC-machined and anodised
- Black hub combined with a blade in one of seven colours
- Rigid, hinge-free design
- No German ABE documented, sold for track use
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato machines the EDB077 from solid aluminium on CNC equipment before anodising it. Anodising builds a hard, coloured oxide layer out of the aluminium surface itself, black on the hub and in the selected colour on the blade. The hub holds the reach adjuster beside the pivot; the blade is solid and runs without a joint to its end. On a touring motorcycle that covers high mileage, the practical result is a lever with no moving parts apart from the pivot and the adjuster, and a finish that keeps its colour for many seasons.
Braking for the Riders Behind You
Riding in a group rewards early, readable braking. When you slow down gradually, your brake light comes on while there is still plenty of distance, and the rider behind has time to react smoothly. A sudden, late stop does the opposite and ripples down the line, with each rider braking a little harder than the one in front. On an R 1200 RT, the smooth version starts with fingers that are already resting on the lever, ready to apply a light first touch that lights the brake light before the real braking begins.
Set the reach so that covering the brake is effortless in your touring gloves, and check that the brake light reacts to the first movement of the blade. With luggage on board, the long blade is worth considering: it gives four fingers room and more leverage, so the heavier RT can be slowed with less effort. Riders who prefer the feel of the original lever will be at home with the standard length, and black and red are made in that length only.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato's list names the R 1200 RT from 2014 to 2019 for the EDB077, which is the liquid-cooled generation. The ESC075 clutch lever is listed for exactly the same years, with the same black hub and colour choice, so the two can be ordered to match. The earlier air/oil-cooled R 1200 RT is not part of this listing.
Road Approval
Because no German ABE is documented for this lever, it is sold for use on race circuits.
