The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The 14-micron mat costs less than the standard woven panel for this airbox — and that is not a discount, it is how the price list is built. Measured across the whole catalogue, the nonwoven media carry one fixed price wherever they appear, while the standard element's price moves with the housing. So a price comparison between two media says something about the airbox, not about the cloth.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven filtering at 14 microns, rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Depth filtration: the load is held inside the mat, not only on its face
- Never oiled — dry when supplied, dry when refitted after a wash
- Direct replacement in the standard 500RR airbox, no modification required
- Washable and reusable, with two years of warranty from the purchase date
- Also listed for the Kove 450 RR, which shares this intake housing
What the price cannot decide
If the finer medium were simply the better one, it would be dearer, and it is not. If the cheaper one were the compromise, it would filter less, and it does not — it holds more. The two numbers that matter move in opposite directions, and the price moves with neither: 1,800 l/m²/sec against 5,050 for the standard weave, in exchange for a mat that stops a great deal more of what is suspended in dry air. Whichever way that trade falls for you, it has to be decided on the roads you ride, because the catalogue is not ranking anything here.
When the mat is the right answer
Dry gravel, unsealed roads in summer, riding behind other vehicles, a dry season that arrives every year — that is the case for SM261P14. A machine that lives on clean tarmac is better matched to the standard element, because the flow it gives up is given up every day and not only on the dusty ones. Neither element adds power: in an unmodified airbox this one leaves a standard 500RR exactly as strong as it was, and what changes is the intake restriction and how steady it stays.
Care and cleaning
A nonwoven parts with its load slowly, so clean the SM261P14 patiently: compressed air on the clean face, worked outwards, and more time than a woven panel needs. Lukewarm water with a mild detergent takes what air will not, rinsed until the water runs off clear. Dry it in moving air at room temperature and in no other way — heat ruins the mat invisibly. Refit it dry, with nothing sprayed on. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
