Sprint Filter PM44S air filter

The facts.

DescriptionThe whole story▼

The YZF-R25 and the YZF-R3 are one motorcycle with two bore sizes, and which of them a country receives is decided by where its licence and tax rules draw the 250 line. That stays invisible to the owner until a service part is wanted in a market where the model was never sold, or an imported bike arrives at a counter whose catalogue has never listed it. The Sprint Filter P08 PM44S is immune to all of that. It is identified by its own code, it takes the place of the paper cartridge in the series airbox, and after the first fitting it is not a part that has to be sourced again — it is washed and refitted for as long as the bike is owned.

Key Features

  • Ordered by element code rather than by a market model name
  • Dry woven polyester at 80 microns, flowing 5,050 litres per square metre per second
  • Threads of 22 microns and upwards, woven into a single filtering layer
  • About twice the filtering surface of other performance filters
  • Series airbox, series fixings — no modification, no remap, homologation as before
  • Washable and reusable, with two years of warranty from purchase

Why the code travels better than the name

Consumables are the awkward part of owning a machine the local dealer network does not recognise. Nobody stocks one, the parts system searches on a name it has never held, and the answer comes back as a shrug. An element identified by its own number skips the whole exchange, because the number describes the airbox and not the badge: this one covers the R25, the R3 and two further machines built around the same housing. And since it is cleaned rather than replaced, the supply question is answered once instead of at every interval.

Dry weave, and the price of a finer one

The P08 is used dry for its whole life, so nothing can be carried downstream onto the sensors that meter the fuel. Where conditions justify it there are finer fabrics: the water-repellent P037 at 37 microns and 4,500 litres per square metre per second, the P14 at 14 microns and 1,800. Every step tighter holds more back and passes less through — a trade, not a ladder — and for a road-going 250 the P08 end of it is the sensible one. None of them is a power part either: on a standard R25 the honest benefit is a low, steady intake restriction, not a bigger number.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air from the clean side outwards settles most services in a few minutes. When it does not, lukewarm water with a mild detergent will, rinsed until the water runs clear; water is part of the design here rather than a risk to it. Drying happens in open air and has to be complete — no heat, no flame — and the PM44S goes back dry. There is no oiling stage at any point. Fitment & Compatibility
